Stanley

Stanley playing

Pan troglodytes troglodytes
Estimated Birth – July 2001

In October 2002, Cameroon authorities confiscated Stanley in the town of Abong Mbang and travelled four hours to bring him to Sanaga-Yong. When he arrived, the baby was dehydrated and suffered from severely infected wounds from a tight rope tied around his waist to restrain him. Stanley was a very sweet baby who immediately accepted and returned affection from caregivers. When his wounds had healed, he joined seven other babies who arrived the month after he did, and the group of young friends spent two years exploring and learning about the forest together under caregiver supervision. In 2005, they joined Jacky’s group of adults and juveniles. Stanley loved playing with the older juveniles, and Jacky, Nama and the other adult females made sure that the play didn’t get too rough for him and his small friends. However, as he matured through adolescence in the coming years, Stanley suffered several injuries, including a deep laceration that split his lip all the way to his nose and left an easily visible scar. As an adult, he has improved his status in the group over time and is one of the most dominant males. When Future was leading the group, Stanley was his strong ally, but he had ambitions of his own. Now he is the strongest contender for the position of alpha male, but not all of the males have submitted to him, so it’s not settled. Stanley enjoys supportive friendships with all the females, and he works on his relationships and alliances with the males via long strategic grooming sessions. He also enjoys interaction with his favorite humans, but it’s always on his terms. When he had a serious wound on his foot in 2020, Stanley rejected caregiver efforts to clean and flush the wound, but he was happy to use a betadine soaked swab to carefully clean the wound himself.
