Carla

In August 2012, a catholic priest delivered recently orphaned eight-month-old Carla to Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center. The dehydrated young infant had been given to the priest the day before by a hunter who thought she would die because she refused to eat. The priest knew the baby needed immediate medical attention and brought her to the sanctuary.

In the care of Sanaga-Yong staff, Carla received veterinary attention, proper baby milk formula and specialized care. She soon grew healthy and strong.

For two years Carla lived with baby Nyanga, another rescued orphan, and developed mentally and physically under the loving supervision of her human caregivers. In 2015, the two were integrated with seven other chimpanzees in an enclosure complex that includes a 2.5-acre tract of lush forest. The new family relationships and larger social group continues to enrich the lives of all involved.
