Milou

Milou

Est. Birth December 2009

Milou arrived at Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in June 2010, less than a month after a hunter killed his mother to supply the illegal trade in ape meat. The tiny baby chimpanzee didn’t have much value for meat, so the hunter kept him alive to sell as a pet.

A European woman volunteering in Cameroon discovered the orphan with the hunter’s family in their village. Overwhelmed by a desire to save the baby, she purchased him. What she did not realize is buying baby chimpanzees is terrible as it encourages hunters to target mothers with nursing infants. She only wanted to help the baby, and she did save him.

The woman started looking for a sanctuary for the baby and found Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center. She was educated about the long-term consequences of buying chimpanzees and the importance of arresting and prosecuting poachers.

At the sanctuary, Milou was integrated with baby orphans Anita, Selma and Margot. For several years they spent their days frolicking in the forest under the watchful eyes of loving human caregivers. Unfortunately, Milou was less cautious in the trees than the other babies, and in 2012, he had a terrible accident. During a fall from a tree, his left eye was irreparably damaged, and surgery to remove it was necessary.

Today, Milou lives in a special one-acre enclosure with six other chimpanzees, including adult male Charlos, who is also disabled. As the youngest member of his social group, he gets a lot of support from everyone.
