Kenza

Kenza

Est. Birth June 2007

When Kenza was still a nursing infant, a poacher killed her mother to supply Cameroon’s illegal, commercial ape meat trade. Being too small to have much value for meat, the baby female was sold as a pet to a Catholic bishop. After keeping her for several months, the bishop contacted the management of Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue in May 2009, seeking a better home for the baby chimpanzee.

When the two-year-old infant arrived at the sanctuary she was malnourished, anemic, infested with lice, afraid of people and very depressed. With medication for parasites and good nutrition, which included infant milk formula four times per day, baby Kenza’s health quickly improved. After a few days of gentle care, she began to overcome her fear and allow herself to be embraced and carried by caregivers.

In 2015, Kenza was introduced to Ballas’ group of six adults in a lushly forested five-acre enclosure. She was quickly accepted by the three females (Bouboule, Jessica and Karmal) and three males (Ballas, Aaron, Boumba) in the group. Despite her young age, she’s a dominant female and commands a lot of respect.
