Gabby

Gabby

Est. Birth September 1999

Gabby found safe haven with Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in January 2000 when a local farmer, Gabriel, arrived at the sanctuary hoping to sell the orphan. It was unclear how he had acquired the baby. The assistant manager refused to compensate the farmer, which would have been illegal and immoral. However, he did agree that if the Gabriel acquiesced and left the orphan at the sanctuary, he would name the baby after him. Had this happened today, Sanaga-Yong would have required that authorities be involved in the transfer.

The sad little chimpanzee had numerous infected pellet wounds over his arms, legs and abdomen. Dr. Sheri Speede treated poor Gabby’s wounds and a volunteer cared for him day and night hoping to nurse him back to health. His right rear leg was paralyzed because of his wounds and Sheri wasn’t sure that he would be able to walk or climb again. Fortunately, Gabby slowly recovered, and after several months, he learned to walk with a limp and even to climb trees.

Today, Gabby is a beautiful, thriving, although lower ranking, male in a social group of nineteen chimpanzees. With his many friends, he enjoys a 20-acre lushly forested enclosure and shows no signs of his previous injuries.
