Bikol

Bikol

Est. Birth June 1998

Bikol was the first baby chimpanzee resident of Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center. He was saved in December 1999, after the staff of Sanaga-Yong received news from French loggers about a starving, sick baby chimpanzee held captive in a local village, restrained by wire that had left deep cuts around his waist. Sanaga-Yong’s assistant manager traveled to the village and managed to bring back Bikol, despite meeting hostility from some of the villagers.

At the sanctuary, Bikol’s wounds were treated, and he was given baby milk formula, plenty of fresh fruit and a chewable vitamin every day. Over several weeks, he gradually returned to good health.

Bikol is a sweet, gentle soul who currently lives with two females (Muna and Akim) and will soon be introduced to three others (Jantan, Kimbang and Gnala) in a new forested enclosure that is being built for them. Bikol means “the king” in one of the local dialects.
