Baati

Baati

Est. Birth May 2005

In December 2005, tiny, seven-month-old Baati was rescued from a village near the town of Nanga Eboko. An employee of Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue was visiting relatives in the village when he was informed of two illegally held babies, and it was later discovered there was a third. Dr. Sheri Speede worked with the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife to coordinate a team of two law officers from the city of Yaoundé to assist local authorities in confiscating the three chimpanzees. Two of the babies, Baati and Yoko, were brought to Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center and the third baby went to the sanctuary of our friends at Ape Action Africa.

The Sanaga-Yong team found Baati confined in a wooden dresser drawer by a woman who hoped to sell him. Although he was clean and uninjured physically, he was emotionally devastated. During his early days at the sanctuary, he was terribly afraid and couldn’t tolerate being touched.

Today, Baati is an important member of a social group of six chimpanzees, including his good friend Sambe, with whom he grew up from the time they were both young babies.
